Group chat vs. forum vs. hub

The short answer: the three shapes differ in what they sort by. A chat sorts by time — ideal for conversation, hopeless as memory. A forum sorts by topic — durable, searchable, but heavyweight for logistics. A hub sorts by object — the event, the file, the vote, the form — which is what a group that organizes things actually needs, with chat kept alongside for the talking.

Chat: the time machine with no reverse gear

Chat is the correct tool for the pulse — presence, banter, the last-minute change. It fails as storage for one structural reason: everything shares one timeline, so importance can’t be expressed (the full mechanics). Under ~10 people the volume is low enough that it doesn’t matter. Past that, the chat needs a partner or the group runs on re-posting.

Forum: the library the internet abandoned

Forums sort by topic and thread, which is why a 2009 forum post still answers your niche question today while last year’s Discord message is effectively gone. There’s real nostalgia for this — hobbyists regularly mourn what was lost when communities moved their knowledge into chat platforms where it can’t be searched or linked. But for a 20-person club, a forum is the wrong weight: slow-cadence, public-shaped, and it still doesn’t RSVP anyone or collect a form. Forums fit large communities building shared knowledge; they were never logistics tools.

Hub: sorted by the things themselves

A hub inverts the priority: the objects a group runs on — events with RSVP lists, files with homes and versions, polls that close into decisions, forms with a who’s-missing list — are the first-class things, each with its own record, and chat runs alongside as conversation. The scroll can eat the banter because the banter is all that’s in it.

Choosing in one line each

A friends’ group that just talks: chat, alone, forever — adding anything else is furniture. A large community building knowledge strangers should find: forum (and resist moving it into chat). A 10–50 person group with a roster, a season, files, or decisions: hub + chat, and the chat you already have is fine — keep it.
